Painting2Photography Task 2 & 7 & 8 - Research of Artists/Photographers

The 3 photographers/artists I have chosen to research are Lucas Samaras, Albert Chong and David Hockney.

The reason I have chosen these three artists/photographers is because their work is all completely different. For example Lucas Samaras takes photographs on a polariod camera and then scratches into them.

I think this is an interesting technique if carried out correctly which Lucas has done. This technique he has done suits his style and personality very well because he was already a painter and a sculptor, that when he tried photography he added these aspects into his work as an edge to separate him from the rest which it does.
His polaroid's are inspiration from his art work because they are created in his self image. His images are called photo-transformations, all based on him as he is in his own photographs. His images are called photo-transformations because of the technique he uses. He transforms the dye on the polaroid's before they dry out.
Polaroid's were invented in 1929 and it was only till 1981 that the polaroid 600 took over, as it could instantly release the photograph taken. When the camera was first released it might not have cost alot now they are worth alot more.
Polaroid was a very big part of history and the company closed down in 2008/9.

Lucas Samaras is well known for his art work on boxes as he uses aluminium, bronze, pins, tacks and razor blades.

“We live in boxes, see and eat with boxes, travel in boxes. . . . Box is a lovely principle that carries a lot of symbolic beans.”

The next photographer/artist i have chosen is Albert Chong. The reason i have chosen Albert Chong is because he takes photographs and add's art backgrounds to the photographs.

Albert Chong also has an art background as he attended a visual arts college and graduated with honours. He is currently teaching photography at the university of Colorado. In Albert's photography he uses personalised documents that have a connection or are important to him along with family photographs. He uses these photographs as a shrine to his family members.

This image is of a family portrait.   This image is of Albert Chong's father's speeding ticket.

I like Albert Chong's style of photography because it has a delicate touch to it which makes his personal possessions more special to look at. In my opinion I think Albert added objects that the subjects liked. For example in the photograph of his fathers speeding ticket there are flowers and a picture/stamp there and maybe Albert choose to have them there because he liked that type of flower and collected stamps or maybe the flower has a hidden meaning or is a sign of love.

This is a photograph named "absolut chong." I think it is named this because these objects represent Albert Chong. For example the vodka bottle could signify he's laid back and the feathers might represent that he's a free spirit. I think its twigs around the edges these could represent that he's growing in the sense that he's got bigger things ahead of him. The skull might represent that he's not afraid of death or that he has lost close members. The other objects could represent many different things. The ordering of these objects is also very important.
His images were taken in the 1990's-2000's.

The last artist I have chosen to research is David Hockney. The reason why I have chosen David Hockney is because he is a well known painter as well as making photograph collages.
The reason I like David Hockney's artwork is because of the vibrancy in the pictures make everything seem sunnier and happier like this painting for example:
With the colours he uses he makes normal things seem enchanting because in real life the houses, walls and the roads wouldn't be as clean as they look in the painting, which I think makes his work special the way he's trying to make the world seem nicer.
David Hockney also paints lots of other categories for example he paints a lot of swimming pools and beaches:
A Hollywood Swimming Pool, 1964

 Pool with two figures, 1972

The Sea At Malibu, 1988

Breakfast At Malibu,Sunday, 1989

The way he chooses to paint them are all completely different for example the waves. David tries to capture the reflectiveness of the sun on the water by using lines, different shades of blue and in the sea at Malibu by abstract shapes. I particularly like the pool with two figures and the breakfast at Malibu painting because they look most realistic.

Lucas Samara, Albert Chong and David Hockney all have an art background in common so they know how to make their work stand out from the rest. I chose these three people because Lucas Samara experiments with photographs, Albert Chong works with art and photography and David Hockney just has art work.
