Documentary Photography Part 2: Task 1: Research Leeds 2011

LEEDS 2011.
This is one of the themes we can choose for our documentary photography.
For this theme i could take pictures around Bradford of the landmarks for example the Alhambra or the new mirror pool that's about to open.
Or take photographs on an aspect of Leeds for example the homelessness or street photography.
In 2008 Martin Parr took photographs around Leeds for the guardian.
Here are some of his images:

Under the train station:
River Aire Under the train station:
Victoria Arcade shopping centre/ Harvey Nichols Cafe:

Although I like the idea of taking pictures of every part of the city i don't think it suits me best.

Documentary Photography Task 3 & Evaluation Task 5 - Produce the images

For task 3 we have to copy one aspect of each photographers photographs and produce our own images from that aspect.
Erich Hartmann produced his images in black and white. I decided to copy this aspect for the remake of my images.

These are some of Erich Hartmann's photographs:

As these photographs are all in black and white and their mostly of places and people i decided to photograph people places and objects. For this i went to the German market in Leeds and photographed some of what the stalls were selling. I think because the image is in black and white part of the story is lost because it looks like it has been simplified. But for some of the images it looks really nice in black and white for example the jewellery images.

I think the images of the jewellery and the snow globes document some items that are being sold in the German Market. I don't think some of the images i have taken are well narrative because you can't tell where the images were taken for example they could have been taken in a shop.
This image looks lovely in black and white because the necklace was silver and the background was red but because the colours were plain i think it looks better in black and white as you can see the focus would be on the jewellery and not on the background because it might distract the attention away.

I think this image works well in black and white because the crystals are colourless and in black and white you can see the purity of it. This image also looks good in colour because of the background lights giving a warm tone and the range of colour there is.
This is the image in colour:

I think this image would look better in colour because the snow globes have little santa's inside them and in black and white you can't really tell.
This is the image in colour. I think this image is better in colour because the red and green add to the christmas theme and in the black and white image you can't tell its christmas snow globes.

I think this image looks more ideal in black and white because its a close up of the snow globes so the colour shouldn't really matter.

This image is documenting the o2 academy building. I think this image looks more useful in black and white because in the colourful image there are red lights illuminating the building and it takes away the focus from the building but on the other hand you could recognize the building from the red lights.

This image is documenting the centenary square in Bradford. The photograph is angled to try and get the top of the building into the top right hand corner to lead the eye into the photograph, I took it standing below looking up. I think this photograph looks good in black and white because the background doesn't take the focus off the building.

I really like this photograph because of the strong lines leading the eye into the photograph to see the buildings behind. I think the image looks very good in colour and in black and white.

For my second photographer Larry Towell I decided to copy the family moments he photographed. Again all his images were in black and white but that isn't the aspect I am focusing on.

Here are some of Larry Towell's Family moments:

Here are some of my family moments:
This image is of my cat going to kiss my mum even though my cat is scared of my mum when she tells her off for scratching the furniture but whenever my mum sits down to watch television she sits down on her lap and purrs and sometimes goes to give her a kiss.
The image is in portrait style and it works well because it focus' on just my mum and my cat.

This image is of my mum watching television. It is in landscape format to fit the television and my mum watching it into the picture.

These images are of my mum playing with my cat. This image is in portrait because i wanted to focus on my cat scratching and biting my mums fingers under her arm.

These two images are in landscape format because i wanted to capture my mums facial expression and my cat playing.

This image is of a letter from our family in Ukraine that we just got into contact with recently after many years of searching. The photograph is in landscape format so you can see the whole letter.

These two images are of my family reading the letter and looking through the photographs our family sent of buildings near them. They are taken from two different angles one from a head on view to see their facial expressions and one from the side to show the content of the letter and my parents and sister looking at the photographs they sent.

This image is of my mother drying her hair. The photograph is in portrait style to focus just on my mum and the hair dryer.

This image is of my family sitting down at the table to eat. Out of all of the images this one has to be my favourite because this is when the family is together and can discuss the events of the day. This image is in landscape format to fit them all in.

This image is of my sister Michaela its the last photograph i took of her before she moved to Italy. Its a nice photograph to keep looking at to remember her when i miss her.I think this image documents her personality exactly because she's crazy, fun and silly. This photograph was taken over my shoulder and we were facing a mirror.

This image is of my mum working at home upholstering a traditional method on a chez long in her spare time.

This is an image of my mum as she just came back from her grading at karate where she passed onto her next belt level.

I'm quite disappointed i didn't get more family moment pictures in but i am very happy with the photographs i have taken and i think they document family moments well.

For my third photographer Jonas Bendiksen the aspect I chose to copy is his composition.
Here are the photographs i tried to replicate:

Jonas Bendiksen's photograph:

For this image I had my dad reversing into our drive on a shutter speed of 5 seconds. This was the original image that I had but as there was some background lights i edited bits of them out using the rubber tool to make it look like stars like in the original photograph and using curves to make the image darker on photo shop. I also cropped the image to where the bright white light ended and changed the hue to make it look more blue like Jonas'.

This image took a few tries to get right. For example we tried first when he was driving out of the drive but it did not turn out as well as I hoped this is what it looked like:
But when my dad was reversing into the drive i thought i would take a sneaky shot and finally it turned out like i wanted to but i would have to edit it a bit in photo shop.
But then after i had some doubts about whether the image would work as a replicate. So i attempted to use a torch and quickly pass it in front of the camera. Here are the results i got:

But i thought these looked a bit fake so my dad came up with the idea to make it look like a rocket by using a blow torch. Here are what those images came out like:
The image above and below didn't turn out very well because the blowtorch started from the left hand side but when we looked back over the images it had started from the middle.
So to conquer this problem my dad held the blowtorch on the left hand side for a couple more seconds after i started taking the photograph and it worked finally.

Jonas Bendiksen's photograph:
When I was trying to replicate this photograph it was very difficult because it was hard to determine where the camera was placed behind the woman and trying to get the shadow of her arms was difficult too yet again because of where the camera would be placed. So after 5 minutes of me and my mum trying to decide where the camera would go I took a practise shot but the composition wasn't totally correct.
As its quite dark and there isn't much light on my mums face the image is quite blurry.

So we decided to take the image again but with a different window and during the daylight.
These two photograph i really liked but because in the original Jonas Bendiksen's image you could see more of the window my mum told me to try from higher up on the ladder.

So this image was the final one that i took and even it looks more like the photograph Jonas Bendiksen did  i prefer the close up one because you can see the plant pot, the half image in the mirror and the curtain, its more detailed.

Jonas Bendiksen's photograph:
This image was very hard to re-create because I couldn't get the view of looking down at the building. So we tried to take the photograph of a building outside our window (Tong high school):
But as I had the camera settings on shutter priority I could either focus on the glass or the building behind.
As we have a broken window downstairs i tried to see if my image would work with that window but again it did not.
Me and my parents thought it was because of the building and it didn't occur to me until later on that it was the camera settings i had it on. So we recreated the broken window and a curtain and took it to a place my dad thought would make a perfect photograph because at the bottom of a hill was a white council estate flat.
This is some of the images still of when the camera setting were wrong:

Out of all the images that went wrong this one has to be my favourite because you can see the glass and you can see the building too.
In order to get these photographs we started taking photographs at the top of the hill and worked out way down to the bottom.

After we had driven off i realized why i couldn't get both the glass and the building in focus and it was because i had to set the camera to aperture mode and to a low f number. I used F11 and the ISO settings were 1600.
For this photograph even though you can see the edge of the wooden window frame we created and parts of the road it was the one that turned out best because i think its the image that best replicates the original image that Jonas Bendiksen did.

This is the remake of the broken window:

Jonas Bendiksen's photograph:
This image was also very very difficult to replicate because me and my dad went to Leeds/Bradford airport. But first we went to a hill where you can oversee the airport runways but i couldn't get a good enough photograph.
This was the image from the faraway hill.
After a while me and my dad decided to drive to the airport site and we took some photographs from the car park because on a small hill above was the planes but when i tried to get a quick shot of the people getting on the planes that had just landed it was the back of the plane and it wasn't the right angle.
So my dad decided to go in and ask one of the workers if there was a viewing area where we could see the planes so i could take a photograph of people getting on but the lady said  i wasn't meant to take photographs in the airport and so we went back outside and took some sneaky shots before security came out!

But then we decided to move or run around the car park to try get the right angle and after a while i got a few photographs which were the best i was going to get.
My remake of the photograph:

Jonas Bendiksen's photograph:
For this image i knew it would be really hard to get birds behind a statue and then i went to the media museum and saw a few statue outside it with some tree's behind and then i went back the next day to take the photographs but they didn't come out as i expected.
 My remake of the photographs:

There was another statue that i decided to photograph but i didn't really like this image as much as the others:
I couldn't get the trees directly behind the statue which was disappointing.

Jonas Bendiksen's photograph:
My remake of the photograph:

This image was quite easy to remake but i couldn't fit in the stairs and the second lift in the same photograph which was bad and i took the photographs too soon when the subjects had their back to me.

                                                      Jonas Bendiksen's photograph:
My remake of the photograph:
I think this image isn't the perfect remake of the image but i think its quite good. I originally took this photograph with cling film over my lens as i was doing in camera effects for Tims lesson but i thought it kind of fits this photograph because its a bit blurry and there is a few lights.

Overall i am very pleased with all my remake images.
